Strange Secrets From THE EXPECTANT MOTHER DISINFORMATION HANDBOOK Revealed!

In the latest episode of Seriah Azkath's WHERE DID THE ROAD GO?, I discuss several of my books, including THE EXPECTANT MOTHER DISINFORMATION HANDBOOK, OPERATION MINDFUCK, CHAMELEO, and CRYPTOSCATOLOGY. Strange Secrets From THE EXPECTANT MOTHER DISINFORMATION HANDBOOK Revealed!:

HOLLYWOOD HAUNTS THE WORLD Is Now Up for Pre-order!

The secret history of the world can be decoded through film.

In Hollywood Haunts the World: An Investigation into the Cinema of Occulted Taboos, Robert Guffey deconstructs the most powerful taboos of the twentieth century (and the initial decades of the twenty-first century) by analyzing how disturbing and transgressive ideas involving Theosophy, Gnosticism, Freemasonry, Darwinian Evolution, Surrealism, Freudian and Jungian psychology, race relations, paranoia, UFOs, xenophobia, political conspiracies, the JFK assassination, virtual reality, and alternate dimensions have been reflected in films―both American and foreign―throughout the past one hundred years.

Popular films and TV shows that fall under Robert Guffey’s cutting-edge scrutiny include Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, Larry Wade Carell’s Girl Next, Matt Shakman’s WandaVision, Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War, Scott Derrickson’s Dr. Strange, Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad, Oliver Stone’s JFK, Mark Frost and David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, John Carpenter’s They Live, Alan Pakula’s The Parallax View, John Frankenheimer’s The Manchurian Candidate, Jack Arnold’s It Came from Outer Space, Edgar G. Ulmer’s The Man from Planet X, Robert Florey’s Murders in the Rue Morgue, Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr., and Victor Sjöström’s The Phantom Carriage.

Editorial Reviews

"In Hollywood Haunts the World, Robert Guffey takes his readers for a trip behind the magic curtain to reveal the true Wizards at work―those behind the lenses, making magic and moving the secret levers. To this end, Guffey plays the role of Toto, tearing the curtain aside to reveal these flesh and bone Wizards of the military-industrial-entertainment complex, and the occult role they play in influencing our inner dreams and everyday realities." -Adam Gorightly, author of Saucers, Spooks, and Kooks and The Shadow Over Santa Susana: Black Magic, Mind Control, and the Manson Family Mythos

"Hollywood has truly haunted the world. So too should this book, one of the best ever written on American cinema."
-Gary D. Rhodes, from his foreword

“Jaw-dropping and essential.”
-Alan Moore on the author’s book, Operation Mindfuck

“Robert Guffey’s writing has impressed, entertained, and enlightened me pretty much since I first met him. My suggestion? If he wrote it, read it.”
-Jack Womack, author of Random Acts of Senseless Violence

“Guffey’s work, full of vast and somewhat offbeat scholarship, is […] imbued with a Southern Californian sensibility that reminds one both of the trippy work of Philip K. Dick and the Sunshine State Noir of Tarantino circa
Pulp Fiction.” -Craig L. Gidney on the author's book, Chameleo

Big Brother in New Orleans

From Anna Washenko's 5-19-25 ENGADGET article entitled "New Orleans Police Secretly Used Facial Recognition on Over 200 Live Camera Feeds":

New Orleans' police force secretly used constant facial recognition to seek out suspects for two years. An investigation by The Washington Post discovered that the city's police department was using facial recognition technology on a privately owned camera network to continually look for suspects. This application seems to violate a city ordinance passed in 2022 that required facial recognition only be used by the NOLA police to search for specific suspects of violent crimes and then to provide details about the scans' use to the city council. However, WaPo found that officers did not reveal their reliance on the technology in the paperwork for several arrests where facial recognition was used, and none of those cases were included in mandatory city council reports.

"This is the facial recognition technology nightmare scenario that we have been worried about,” said Nathan Freed Wessler, an ACLU deputy director. "This is the government giving itself the power to track anyone — for that matter, everyone — as we go about our lives walking around in public." Wessler added that the is the first known case in a major US city where police used AI-powered automated facial recognition to identify people in live camera feeds for the purpose of making immediate arrests.

Police use and misuse of surveillance technology has been thoroughly documented over the years. Although several US cities and states have placed restrictions on how law enforcement can use facial recognition, those limits won't do anything to protect privacy if they're routinely ignored by officers.

From Ashley Belanger's 5-19-25 ARS TECHNICA article entitled "New Orleans Called Out for Sketchiest Use of Facial Recognition Yet in the US":

New Orleans Police Department superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick told the Post that she would be conducting a review of the program and turning off all automated alerts until she is "sure that the use of the app meets all the requirements of the law and policies."

The ACLU is demanding a stronger response, asking for a full investigation into how many arrests were made and urging NOPD to permanently stop using the AI-enhanced feeds. In a statement sent to Ars, Alanah Odoms, the executive director of the ACLU of Louisiana, said that without a full investigation, there would be no way to know the extent of potential harms of the secret AI surveillance to the community.

"We cannot ignore the real possibility of this tool being weaponized against marginalized communities, especially immigrants, activists, and others whose only crime is speaking out or challenging government policies," Odoms said. "These individuals could be added to Project Nola's watchlist without the public’s knowledge and with no accountability or transparency on the part of the police departments."

The cameras in New Orleans are operated by Project Nola, a nonprofit founded by a former cop, Bryan Lagarde, who wanted to help police more closely monitor the city's "crime-heavy areas," the Post reported.

Configured to scan live footage for people "on a list of wanted suspects," the camera network supposedly assisted in at least 34 arrests since 2023, Project Nola has claimed in social media posts. But the Post struggled to verify that claim, since "the city does not track such data and the nonprofit does not publish a full accounting of its cases."

The Lost Ocean of Mars

From SciTechDaily's 5-16-25 article entitled "Scientists May Have Found a Massive Ocean of Water Deep Beneath Mars’ Surface":

Scientists have uncovered a seismic signature beneath Mars’ surface that hints at something astonishing—liquid water may still exist in the planet’s upper crust.

This exciting research comes from an international team of scientists: Dr. Weijia Sun and Dr. Yongxin Pan from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr. Hrvoje Tkalčić from the Australian National University, and Dr. Marco G. Malusà from the University of Milano-Bicocca [...].

[T]he team of geologists and geophysicists turned their focus to the planet’s crust. They suspected that its internal structure could hold the key to finding hidden water. Using seismic data from NASA’s InSight mission, the scientists analyzed the wave patterns created by two massive meteorite impacts (named S1000a and S1094b) and the largest marsquake ever recorded (S1222a).

Their analysis revealed something remarkable—a zone 5.4 to 8 kilometers deep where seismic waves slowed down significantly. This slowdown could mean the presence of liquid water at the base of Mars’ upper crust.

The Parapolitical Wendt

According to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, actor George Wendt passed away earlier today at the age of 76.

Despite the fact that the majority of today's new reports have focused on Wendt's role as Norm Peterson on the popular television sitcom, CHEERS, I primarily associate him with two parapolitical-centric roles. The first is that of murderer Graham McVeigh in COLUMBO: STRANGE BEDFELLOWS (1995). Yes, indeed, Wendt portrayed a killer named "McVeigh" in an episode of COLUMBO that aired only 19 days after the Oklahoma City Bombing and only 16 days after Timothy McVeigh was first publicly connected to the destruction of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The plot of this particular episode of COLUMBO involves Lt. Columbo (Peter Falk) of the Los Angeles Police Department forging a conspiratorial alliance with organized crime in order to create an elaborate psychological warfare game that will force McVeigh into confessing to an unsolved murder.

Wendt's other parapolitical role came a little over ten years earlier in the 1984 science fiction film DREAMSCAPE, produced by Roger Corman's New World Cinema, in which he plays a novelist/conspiracy theorist named Charlie Prince who helps the main character, Alex Gardner (Dennis Quaid), uncover a plot to assassinate the President of the United States (Eddie Albert, another COLUMBO murderer) that involves dispatching a psychic assassin to invade the nuclear-tinged nightmares of the POTUS. Here's the trailer for DREAMSCAPE...

Halfway to Halloween!

Since we're now officially past the "Halfway to Halloween" Rubicon, this would seem to be an auspicious occasion to begin gearing up for the most important holiday of the year. If you
hardcore Halloweenphiles want to start stocking up on your October reading material right now, it just so happens I have a couple of prime recommendations for you. I'm very proud of the fact that I've written two books about the legendary Bela Lugosi. The most recent, BELA LUGOSI'S DEAD, is a dark fantasy set in Los Angeles during the late 1980s. Back in 2021, Adam Sayne and Serfiel Stevenson of the CONSPIRINORMAL podcast interviewed me about BELA LUGOSI'S DEAD, focusing on Lugosi's relationship with esotericism and Manly P. Hall. You can hear that entire interview on YouTube:

Conspirinormal 372- Robert Guffey (Bela Lugosi's Dead)

“Blending intertextual rampage through the horror-movie canon with engrossing noir mystery and a backdrop of Hollywood esoterica, Robert Guffey serves up an intoxicating pulp cocktail that will leave you wanting more. A crepuscular treasure from a fascinating author.”

--ALAN MOORE, author of V FOR VENDETTA and WATCHMEN

My first Lugosi-centric book (co-authored by Gary D. Rhodes) is BELA LUGOSI AND THE MONOGRAM NINE, which examines the nine films Lugosi made for Monogram Studios during World War II. Back in 2019, right before Halloween, Gary and I appeared on Roejen Razorwire's PROJECT ARCHIVIST podcast to discuss the book at great length. If you want to listen to this weird and macabre interview, simply click HERE!

"BELA LUGOSI AND THE MONOGRAM NINE, by Gary Rhodes and Robert Guffey, critically and wonderfully examines a series of no-budget films made by no-budget Monogram Studios in the 1940s featuring Lugosi that are among the most wonderfully odd cinematic follies ever made--surrealistic, straight from the subconscious, sometimes stupid, at moments seeming to spring from the mind of Bunuel, and in the next, an idea Ed Wood would have discarded as too unbelievable. But, movies always unlike any others, and at their best seeming like fever dreams through which Lugosi calmly walks in evening clothes carrying a flaming blowtorch. I highly recommend this book."

I Return To... WHERE DID THE ROAD GO?

I recently returned to Seriah Azkath's WHERE DID THE ROAD GO? to discuss my latest book, THE EXPECTANT MOTHER DISINFORMATION HANDBOOK. The episode just dropped a couple of days ago, though we recorded it back on the night of April 5th. Much ground is covered during this interview. Hear about the time I met Jack Kirby! Thrill to my daring exploits combating rampant homophobia! Learn about such odd phenomena as Involuntary Dimensional Transits, Fetuses From Space, Muppetitis, Midwich Disease, and Oneirokyesis (known to some pediatricians as “Dream Baby Disease”). Discover the dangers of allowing your fetus in utero internet connection, how to use your child as an assassin, the little known fact that Shakespeare created pregnancy, and Dracula's attitudes regarding child raising, among many other illuminating tidbits of obscure but vital historical data! THE VERGE on "AI Therapy"

From Adi Robertson's 5-13-25 THE VERGE article entitled "AI Therapy Is a Surveillance Machine in a Police State":

Mark Zuckerberg wants you to be understood by the machine. The Meta CEO has recently been pitching a future where his AI tools give people something that “knows them well,” not just as pals, but as professional help. “For people who don’t have a person who’s a therapist,” he told Stratechery’s Ben Thompson, “I think everyone will have an AI.”

The jury is out on whether AI systems can make good therapists, but this future is already legible. A lot of people are anecdotally pouring their secrets out to chatbots, sometimes in dedicated therapy apps, but often to big general-purpose platforms like Meta AI, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, or xAI’s Grok. And unfortunately, this is starting to seem extraordinarily dangerous — for reasons that have little to do with what a chatbot is telling you, and everything to do with who else is peeking in.

This might sound paranoid, and it’s still hypothetical. It’s a truism someone is always watching on the internet, but the worst thing that comes of it for many people is some unwanted targeted ads. Right now in the US, though, we’re watching the impending collision of two alarming trends. In one, tech executives are encouraging people to reveal ever more intimate details to AI tools, soliciting things users wouldn’t put on social media and may not even tell their closest friends. In the other, the government is obsessed with obtaining a nearly unprecedented level of surveillance and control over residents’ minds: their gender identities, their possible neurodivergence, their opinions on racism and genocide [...].

Even if you’re one of the few American citizens with truly nothing to hide in your public or private life, we’re not talking about an administration known for laser-guided accuracy here. Trump officials are notorious for governing through bizarrely blunt keyword searches that appear to confuse “transgenic” with “transgender” and assume someone named Green must do green energy. They reflexively double down on admitted mistakes. You’re one fly in a typewriter away from everybody else.

In an ideal world, companies would resist indiscriminate data-sharing because it’s bad business. But they might suspect that many people will have no idea it’s happening, will believe facile claims about fighting terrorism and protecting children, or will have so much learned helplessness around privacy that they don’t care. The companies could assume people will conclude there’s no alternative, since competitors are likely doing the same thing.

If AI companies are genuinely dedicated to building trustworthy services for therapy, they could commit to raising the privacy and security bar for bots that people use to discuss sensitive topics. They could focus on meeting compliance standards for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) or on designing systems whose logs are encrypted in a way that they can’t access, so there’s nothing to turn over. But whatever they do right now, it’s undercut by their ongoing support for an administration that holds contempt for the civil liberties people rely on to freely share their thoughts, including with a chatbot...

BECOMING NOSFERATU

I just received my comp copy of BECOMING NOSFERATU edited by Gary D. Rhodes and Matthew Sorrento! Gary and Matt did a fantastic job putting together this hefty anthology of strange tales inspired by silent German horror. I'm very proud to share the same Table of Contents page with such writers as Steve Berman, Stephen R. Bissette, and Jeffrey Ford. My own contribution, a novelette entitled "The Land of Thieves and Phantoms" (16,200 words), is my first new story published in 2025 and was inspired by disturbing current events as filtered through the lens of Expressionist cinema. I urge you to check it out!

ROLLING STONE on "AI-Fueled Spiritual Fantasies"

From Miles Klee's 5-4-25 ROLLING STONE article entitled "People Are Losing Loved Ones to AI-Fueled Spiritual Fantasies":

Less than a year after marrying a man she had met at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Kat felt tension mounting between them. It was the second marriage for both after marriages of 15-plus years and having kids, and they had pledged to go into it “completely level-headedly,” Kat says, connecting on the need for “facts and rationality” in their domestic balance. But by 2022, her husband “was using AI to compose texts to me and analyze our relationship,” the 41-year-old mom and education nonprofit worker tells Rolling Stone. Previously, he had used AI models for an expensive coding camp that he had suddenly quit without explanation — then it seemed he was on his phone all the time, asking his AI bot “philosophical questions,” trying to train it “to help him get to ‘the truth,’” Kat recalls. His obsession steadily eroded their communication as a couple.

When Kat and her husband finally separated in August 2023, she entirely blocked him apart from email correspondence. She knew, however, that he was posting strange and troubling content on social media: people kept reaching out about it, asking if he was in the throes of mental crisis. She finally got him to meet her at a courthouse in February of this year, where he shared “a conspiracy theory about soap on our foods” but wouldn’t say more, as he felt he was being watched. They went to a Chipotle, where he demanded that she turn off her phone, again due to surveillance concerns. Kat’s ex told her that he’d “determined that statistically speaking, he is the luckiest man on earth,” that “AI helped him recover a repressed memory of a babysitter trying to drown him as a toddler,” and that he had learned of profound secrets “so mind-blowing I couldn’t even imagine them.” He was telling her all this, he explained, because although they were getting divorced, he still cared for her.

“In his mind, he’s an anomaly,” Kat says. “That in turn means he’s got to be here for some reason. He’s special and he can save the world.” After that disturbing lunch, she cut off contact with her ex. “The whole thing feels like Black Mirror,” she says. “He was always into sci-fi, and there are times I wondered if he’s viewing it through that lens.”

Kat was both “horrified” and “relieved” to learn that she is not alone in this predicament, as confirmed by a Reddit thread on r/ChatGPT that made waves across the internet this week. Titled “Chatgpt induced psychosis,” the original post came from a 27-year-old teacher who explained that her partner was convinced that the popular OpenAI model “gives him the answers to the universe.” Having read his chat logs, she only found that the AI was “talking to him as if he is the next messiah.” The replies to her story were full of similar anecdotes about loved ones suddenly falling down rabbit holes of spiritual mania, supernatural delusion, and arcane prophecy — all of it fueled by AI. Some came to believe they had been chosen for a sacred mission of revelation, others that they had conjured true sentience from the software.

What they all seemed to share was a complete disconnection from reality.

I Make My Debut Apppearance on THE AP STRANGE SHOW!!!

The latest episode of THE AP STRANGE SHOW just dropped! Here's AP Strange's description of this epic 2 1/2 hour-long interview:

Robert Guffey joins AP in this episode for a lengthy and mind-bending chat that covers a lot of weird ground. Robert is a well-known writer and author of both fiction and non-fiction, and in this chat the difficulty in telling the difference between the two is well illustrated. One of his books, CHAMELEO, is discussed at length - in particular, how much of what seemed fantastic or crazy in it when it was released ten years ago now seems eerily prescient.

In addition, Robert discusses his newest book, THE EXPECTANT MOTHER DISINFORMATION HANDBOOK, and his short stories from CRYPTOPOLIS; science fiction and how it overlaps with secret government projects; how stories are told in media broadly about weird and paranoid subject matter; all this and more!
