Géza A. G. Reilly recently published a perceptive review of my latest book, THE EXPECTANT MOTHER DISINFORMATION HANDBOOK, in the final issue of DEAD RECKONINGS (#36). Entitled "When Everything Is Wrong and Nothing Is for Anyone," Reilly's four-page review encapsulates the HANDBOOK in this way:
We've got plenty of people who think that they know best--better even than a given pregnant woman. We don't need more of them, but we could damn well use more examples of them turned into buffoons just like we get to see in the Handbook [...]. [The Expectant Mother Disinformation Handbook] is often weird, often funny, frightfully well written, and it gives us that unique satisfaction that only fiction can provide by putting the bastards into a magic circle of their own disinformation and locking them away. Isn't it sweet to think that they'd stay there.
Here's another choice excerpt:
Pregnancy, the alchemical miracle of the spontaneous generation of an actual, no kidding, for really real thinking and feeling human being is a wonderful thing that can be understood, be emphasized with, be witnessed with joy... but it isn't the domain of meddlers. It isn't supposed to be the space in the human experience where veritable Hall Monitors like the authors of the Handbook dip their beaks in and insist that pregnancy, fetuses, and mothers should be and behave in only the ways that they find acceptable. There is one road to righteousness, those authors suggest, and Guffey pulls a sorcerous spell by allowing us to understand just how delusional those with such presumptions are by the end of his text.
This issue also contains contributions by the likes of Ramsey Campbell, S.T. Joshi, and Darrell Schweitzer. If you want to buy a copy of DEAD RECKONINGS #36, click HERE.
