A Thanksgiving Prayer (Ad Infinitum)

A cheery holiday tradition continues! From William S. Burroughs' spoken word album, DEAD CITY RADIO (produced by Island Records in 1990), comes this classic routine entitled "A Thanksgiving Prayer," which originally appeared in WSB's 1989 short story collection TORNADO ALLEY. The background music is provided by Frank Denning....

REGARDING THE MATTER OF OSWALD'S BODY

In recognition of the 59th anniversary of the assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald, I suggest reading Christopher Cantwell and artist Luca Casalanguida's graphic novel, REGARDING THE MATTER OF OSWALD'S BODY, which debuted in serialized form in November of 2021 and completed its run earlier this year. It's now available in a single edition from BOOM! Studios:

"The Kennedy assassination is a rat’s nest of conspiracy theories: mafia involvement, the second gunman, government cover-up… but the most important chapter of this sordid tale may just be the theory that the body buried at Oswald’s Rose Hill gravesite is not actually Lee Harvey himself.

"Meet the ragtag group of 'useful idiots' – a wannabe cowboy from Wisconsin, a Buddy Holly-idolizing (former) car thief, a world-weary Civil Rights activist ready for revolution, and a failed G-Man who still acts the part – who are unwittingly brought together to clean up the crime of the century, and specifically deal with the matter of Oswald’s body."

And since you're clearly in a Lee Harvey Oswald mood, you might also want to read Mae Brussell's "The Last Words of Lee Harvey Oswald" (courtesy of David Ratcliffe's Ratical.org):

"Did Lee Harvey Oswald act alone in shooting Pres. John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963, or did he conspire with others? Was he serving as an agent of Cuba's Fidel Castro, himself the target of American assassins? Or in squeezing the trigger of his carbine was he undertaking some super 'dirty trick' for a CIA anxious to rid itself of a president whose faith in the 'company' had evaporated in the wake of the Bay of Pigs fiasco? Or was he representing a group of Cuban exiles, the Teamsters Union, the Mafia? Indeed, was it Lee Harvey Oswald at all who killed JFK? Or was there a double impersonating Oswald? These questions continue to nag many people more than a decade and a half after that dreadful day in Dallas, in spite of the 26 volumes of hearings and exhibits served up by the Warren Commission, the congressional investigations, the release of heretofore classified FBI documents.

"Almost everyone, it seems, has been heard from on the Kennedy assassination and on Lee Harvey Oswald's guilt or innocence, except one person—Lee Harvey Oswald himself. From the time of Oswald's arrest to his own assassination at the hands of Jack Ruby, no formal transcript or record was kept of statements made by the alleged killer. It was said that no tape recordings were made of Oswald's remarks, and many notes taken of his statements were destroyed.

"Determined to learn Oswald's last words, his only testimony, The People's Almanac assigned one of the leading authorities on the Kennedy assassination, Mae Brussell, to compile every known statement or remark made by Oswald between his arrest and death. The quotes, edited for space and clarity, are based on the recollections of a variety of witnesses present at different times and are not verbatim transcripts. 'After 14 years of research on the JFK assassination,' Mae Brussell concludes, 'I am of the opinion that Lee Harvey Oswald was telling the truth about his role in the assassination during these interrogations.'"

CLUB Q SHOOTER

From William O'Conner and Corbin Bolies' 11-20-22 DAILY BEAST article entitled "Rifle-Toting Gunman Turns Drag Show Into Bloodbath":

A rifle-toting gunman opened fire during a drag show at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, killing five and injuring 25 before he was tackled by heroic patrons.

Authorities said the suspect, Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, was in custody. Although police did not provide a motive for the nation’s latest mass shooting, Club Q called it a "hate attack" in a statement.

The violence that unfolded just before midnight drew immediate comparisons to the 2016 shooting at the gay nightclub Pulse, which left 49 dead. It also came as drag shows have been condemned by some factions of the far right.

From Teri Figueroa and David Hernandez's 11-20-22 SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE article entitled "Accused Colorado Nightclub Gunman Grandson of Longtime East County Politician":

The 22-year-old man arrested early Sunday as the suspected gunman in a deadly mass shooting at a LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado is the grandson of longtime East County politician Randy Voepel [of San Diego, CA].

Shortly before midnight Saturday, a gunman opened fire in Club Q in Colorado Springs, police there said. Five people died and 25 more were injured. Five minutes after the first calls came in, police arrested the suspected shooter: Anderson Lee Aldrich.

Aldrich’s mother appears to be Laura Voepel, according to media outlets including The Guardian, The Hill and The Gazette in Colorado Springs. Records reviewed by the Union-Tribune list the same Colorado Springs apartment address for her and Aldrich.

Laura Voepel is the daughter of state Assemblymember Randy Voepel, 71, who has represented the 71st District since 2016. He served on the Santee City Council as a council member and mayor for two decades [...]. [Note: The little-known town of Santee is mentioned on p. 48 of my 2015 nonfiction book, CHAMELEO. Despite being a relatively obscure suburb, it managed to make international headlines in 2020--twice in the same week--for being a hotbed of white supremacy. For further information, read this 5-15-20 SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE article entitled "Santee Is Called 'Klantee' for a Reason. We Deed to Talk About It."--RG]

Last year, [Randy] Voepel faced criticism after he compared the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol to the American Revolutionary War.

“This is Lexington and Concord. First shots fired against tyranny,” Voepel told the Union-Tribune three days after the deadly Capitol riot. “Tyranny will follow in the aftermath of the Biden swear-in on January 20th” [...].

San Diego County has ties to a prior mass shooting in Colorado. In July 2012, graduate student James Holmes walked into an Aurora, Colo. movie theater and opened fire, killing 12 and wounding dozens. Aurora is a suburb of Denver, roughly 70 miles north of Colorado Springs. Holmes was born and raised in San Diego. He was attending graduate school in Colorado at the time of the shooting.

Unconstitutional Surveillance and Harassment in Trump's America

From Dell Cameron's 11-5-22 GIZMODO article entitled "Homeland Security Admits It Tried to Manufacture Fake Terrorists for Trump":

The Department of Homeland Security launched a failed operation that ensnared hundreds, if not thousands, of U.S. protesters in what new documents show was as a sweeping, power-hungry effort before the 2020 election to bolster President Donald Trump’s spurious claims about a “terrorist organization” he accused his Democratic rivals of supporting.

An internal investigative report, made public this month by Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat of Oregon, details the findings of DHS lawyers concerning a previously undisclosed effort by Trump’s acting secretary of homeland security, Chad Wolf, to amass secret dossiers on Americans in Portland attending anti-racism protests in summer 2020 sparked by the police murder of Minneapolis father George Floyd.

The report describes attempts by top officials to link protesters to an imaginary terrorist plot in an apparent effort to boost Trump’s reelection odds, raising concerns now about the ability of a sitting president to co-opt billions of dollars’ worth of domestic intelligence assets for their own political gain [...].

The report is based on interviews with approximately 80 employees conducted by attorneys drawn from various agency components, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Coast Guard. The investigation began in response to leaks of internal DHS emails in July 2020 that prompted questions from lawmakers about potential intelligence abuses, including the monitoring of journalists’ activities online and the liberal application of terrorism-related language to describe Americans engaged in protest.

I&A is one of the nation’s 17 intelligence community members overseen by the nation’s “top spy,” the director of national intelligence, whose office drafts daily top-secret briefings for the president. The directorship was held throughout the protests by John Ratcliffe, a Republican of Texas and renowned Trump loyalist […].

The dossiers, known as Operational Background Reports, or OBRs, are known colloquially within the agency as “baseball cards,” the report says. The task of creating them was handed, “with little to no guidance on execution,” to the agency’s Current and Emerging Threats Center, an analysis unit whose “actionable intelligence” is distributed widely throughout the government. According to the report, the dossiers would’ve been shared with, among others, the agency’s Field Operations Division, which works closely with House and Senate committee staffers, and the Federal Protection Service, whose core mission is securing some 9,000 federal facilities across the country. The extent to which entities outside the federal government were meant to be involved is unclear; however, the report indicates that DHS state and local partners, which would naturally include law enforcement, but also potentially organizations like National Governors Association, could have also been in the loop.

Funded to the tune of $1.5 billion, the Federal Protective Service (FPS) is comprised of thousands of security officers drawn from private contractors such as Triple Canopy, a firm merged in 2014 with another contractor called Academi, previously known as Blackwater. Its staff notoriously included elite warfighters recruited from among the Navy SEALS, the Army Rangers, and the Marines expeditionary force MARSOC.

Activated to engage protesters targeting federal buildings in Portland — including the well-vandalized Hatfield Federal Courthouse — FPS personnel were eventually joined by officers hailing from across the federal government, including some on loan by the U.S. Marshals Service tactical unit normally tasked with making the arrests of the nation’s most violent fugitives. They converged for a mission dubbed “Operation Diligent Valor,” authorized under Executive Order 13933, purportedly to apprehend “anarchists and left-wing extremists” who’d been driven by Floyd’s murder to target U.S. monuments commemorating slave owners and Confederate traitors — dangerous individuals, Trump said, advancing a “fringe ideology” painting the U.S. government as “fundamentally unjust.”

Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted of murder and sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison in 2021, sparked more than 100 days of continuous marches in Portland. Sporadic protests continued well into the next spring, frequently marked by nightly standoffs between protesters toting bottles, fruit, and fireworks and riot-control squads armed with nightsticks, pepperspray, and “kinetic impact munitions” designed to irritate, disorient, and compel compliance through pain […].

Reports began surfacing, meanwhile, of protesters being abducted near demonstrations by men jumping out of unmarked vans in military fatigues. After widely circulated footage confirmed the accounts, DHS acknowledged the abductions, as well as the fact that agents had taken intentional steps to ensure their identities remained secret.

Analysts would feed protesters’ names into an array of databases, including LexisNexis, a tool used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to hunt undocumented immigrants. Another tool, referred to as “Tangles” — a likely reference to the now-defunct Facebook app CrowdTangle — was used to “[compile] information from the subject’s available social media profiles.

The report also states that dossiers were requested on multiple journalists […].

"A Conspiracy Theory About a Conspiracy Theorist": RELIGION DISPATCHES on David DePape

From Susannah Crockford's 11-2-22 RELIGION DISPATCHES article entitled "Pelosi Attacker's New Age Spirituality and Belief in QAnon Is No Contradiction":

Around 3 a.m. on October 28, David DePape attacked Paul Pelosi, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s husband, with a hammer. During the attack, DePape yelled “Where’s Nancy?” raising concerns that his true intent was political assassination of the second-in-line to the presidency. The potential political motive for this brutal act led to questions about who DePape is and what he believes in, with early reports focusing on his “strange descent” and “political metamorphosis” from a one-time Green Party supporter to a spreader of right-wing conspiracy theories.

While he affiliated with the Green Party in his San Francisco voting records back in 2013, he has since posted on a range of conspiracy theories, including QAnon and 2020 election rigging, on two separate blogs and Facebook [...].

That DePape was both active on the far-right image board /pol/ on 4chan and linked to a house in Berkeley, California with a Pride rainbow weed symbol flag and a “Berkeley stands united against hate” sign is the source of much confusion from commentators so far. The juxtaposition of these symbols does appear, on the surface at least, to be contradictory. Of course, DePape no longer resides at that house. He did in 2013, when the San Francisco Chronicle interviewed his acquaintance Gypsy Taub, a nudity activist, about her upcoming wedding (at which DePape was to be the best man). In that article, it states that DePape made hemp jewelry for a living. Associating with nudity activists, particularly Taub, seems to locate DePape in San Francisco hippie culture.

Taub is a self-described rebel, Deadhead, and homeschool mom with a school bus who met her husband Jaymz Smith at a Rainbow Gathering and saw him as the reincarnation of her previous husband, Sergey. As well as yoga and raw food, she was interested in 9/11 truther theories, once running a public access TV show Uncensored 9/11, which she presented naked. In her subsequent show My Naked TV, no longer on public access, she and a guest would talk for half an hour naked, about almost anything. (There’s also a website, in which Taub leaves her own digital trail of blog posts.)

Despite the media focus on the connection between Taub and DePape, however, she clearly hasn’t been involved in any of his recent actions since she’s been in the California Institute for Women for stalking and the attempted kidnapping of a 14-year-old boy since 2021 [...].

Failing to understand the crossover between new age spirituality and conspiracy theories, many assume that those who present as hippies are necessarily left-wing, an assumption that only enables the political Right to deny responsibility. Almost immediately as details of the Pelosi attack emerged, a conspiracy theory about DePape emerged that he and Paul Pelosi were somehow sexually involved. Over the weekend, the new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, tweeted and then deleted an article making this allegation from the fake news site the Santa Monica Observer. The conspiracy theory transmuted accusations of increasing right-wing political violence into a tawdry story of a domestic dispute between two men, coupled with an attempt to associate addiction and homosexuality with degeneracy.

On social media, this conspiracy theory spread, along with frequent use of the images of the Berkeley house with the Pride/weed flag and school bus (which displayed a sign about the psychoactive substance ibogaine as a “natural addiction treatment”), to claim DePape is both gay and left-wing, and that the attack on Pelosi was therefore not perpetrated by anyone on the Right.

What’s formed is essentially a conspiracy theory about a conspiracy theorist, and it fuels a form of false equivalence—that ‘both sides’ have a problem with political violence—coupled with the familiar sense of bewilderment that disinformation brings. A sense that we can never really know the truth, so we should probably give up because comprehension is futile [...].

What’s often overlooked about new age spirituality is its roots in White supremacy, that long history of right-wing esoteric ideas that fuels the antisemitism, racism, and misogyny running through conspirituality [...]. Explicit QAnon conspiracy theories that prominent Democrats are blood-drinking, demon-worshiping, child traffickers are supported by generalized cultural assumptions that elites are exploitative and criminal.

Such conspiracy theories are fed by a sense of righteousness, of fighting on the side of the good against an evil cabal. People involved in new age spirituality are also fed by a sense of self-righteousness, a form of purity culture, that they make the right choices with their clean diets and spiritually superior practices. Therefore when bad things happen, there must be someone else to blame, and they have the right to punish evildoers. They only need to take a small step to find themselves in explicit White supremacy and fascism.

The ODNI UFO Report

From Josh Boswell's 10-31-22 DAILY MAIL article entitled "New Classified Report to Congress Says Only HALF of UFO Sightings Can Be Properly Explained, Leaving Nearly 200 Mysteries Unsolved – as Critics Say Investigators 'Glossed Over' Unknown Cases":

A classified report due to be sent to Congress Monday lists more than 150 cases of unexplained UFO encounters by military and government officials in the past year, sources told DailyMail.com exclusively.

The 22-page report, compiled by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), analyzes 366 cases – and only about half of them could be explained, two sources close to the department said [...].

A public version of the report, stripped of classified information, is due to be published by ODNI Monday but sources say both the classified and unclassified versions have been delayed by a few days.

The UFO dossier is the debut of an annual report mandated by last year's National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), part of a slew of new legislation forcing more government transparency on unexplained phenomena in our airspace and seas.

The 366 cases sources described in the classified report represent a large increase from the 144 covered in a 'preliminary assessment' published last year by the ODNI.

The June 2021 dossier said one case had been explained as a balloon, and of the remaining 143 unexplained cases dated between 2004 and 2021, 80 reports 'involved observation with multiple sensors'.

All cases came from 'US government sources'.

Members of the intelligence community who are eager for the government to address the issue of unexplained craft in our skies, were disappointed by the report's focus on cases investigators were able to solve.

'They're patting themselves on the back that they've resolved over half of them,' the ODNI source said.

'But we don't give a crap about the ones they've resolved. Yeah, there's balloons up there, and balloons are sometimes mistaken for UAP.

'But there are s***loads of classified videos that are pretty profound and pretty clear.

'They don't want to talk about this stuff, because they really, really don't know what the hell they are. That's the truth.'

The classified report has been sent to the Armed Services, Appropriations, Foreign Affairs or Relations, and Intelligence committees of the House and Senate.

The 2022 NDAA, signed into law last December, requires the government to release a public report on UFO incidents each year by October 31, with a classified annex sent only to lawmakers with security clearance.

But sources told DailyMail.com that ODNI instead wrote a single, classified report and is running a few days behind schedule delivering it to Congress and creating a public, declassified version.

NBC News: "Government UFO Report Timed for Halloween Seems to Downplay Spooky Sightings"

From Rizwan Virk's 10-31-22 NBC News article entitled "Government UFO Report Timed for Halloween Seems to Downplay Spooky Sightings":

Right in time for Halloween, U.S. intelligence agencies were due on Monday to deliver a classified progress report on UFOs to Congress, with an unclassified summary of the report expected to be posted online later this week. Earlier this month, NASA also announced the 16 members of its new unclassified independent team, consisting of prominent scientists, an astronaut and a science journalist, to look at the phenomenon from “a scientific perspective.”

Monday’s report comes after Congress called for the establishment of a permanent office to study UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena, the government’s new and improved term for UFOs) at the Pentagon last year and then held its first public hearing on the topic in more than 50 years this spring. That hearing discussed an unclassified report issued by a Department of Defense task force in 2021.

Many UFO investigation proponents like myself were underwhelmed by the Pentagon’s unclassified 2021 report, which offered an explanation for only one of the 144 incidents the department said were being investigated. But at least it correctly acknowledged that it couldn’t rule out any explanation, including extraterrestrial origins. After all, in some of the incidents, Navy pilots publicly stated that they’d encountered exotic objects that were “not of this world” and “accelerated like nothing I’ve ever seen.”

But leaked details and communications from officials ahead of Monday’s report and the announcement of NASA’s new team suggested that some in the government are eager to put the issue to rest without a full, open-minded investigation — just as it did in the last open attempt to get to the bottom of the phenomena back in the 1960s [...].

There is now a danger that the NASA study, which is also supposed to be objective, may not live up to this scientific ideal. For one thing, NASA’s study is only looking at unclassified data. “Most of the interesting data from the past is classified,” Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb told me in an email. Loeb is head of the Galileo Project, one of the few academic projects that’s trying to generate new data on UFOs. (Disclosure: I am an adviser to the Galileo Project and other UFO-related endeavors, though I receive no financial returns from them.)

While some of NASA’s top brass and study team members have tried to reassure the public that they don’t have pre-conclusions, others have already raised concerns. Loeb points out: “Some members of the panel expressed explicit views against scientific research on UAP. Their selection raises concern about the neutrality of the panel.”

For example, panelist Nadia Drake, a science journalist, made her position clear in a tweet thread before she was named to be part of the panel: “I don’t buy for a second that anyone involved reasonably expects to find evidence of extraterrestrial technology here” [...].

Members of Congress, the former director of national intelligence, President Barack Obama and even a former head of the CIA have said the same thing: that there is something not yet explainable, and dare I say it on this Halloween, even spooky, flying around our night skies. Einstein himself used the term spooky when confronted with science he didn’t understand or believe in — quantum entanglement, which turned out to be real and this year was recognized with a Nobel Prize.

For NASA’s panel to avoid stigmatizing the study of UFOs and spur the science needed for a thorough investigation, my request to members is simple: Please try not to prejudge the conclusions of the study, which is what all science should be about. Furthermore, at some stage NASA will need access to the classified data.

NEW YORK TIMES: "Many Military U.F.O. Reports Are Just Foreign Spying or Airborne Trash"

From Julian E. Barnes' 10-28-22 NEW YORK TIMES article entitled "Many Military U.F.O. Reports Are Just Foreign Spying or Airborne Trash":

Government officials believe that surveillance operations by foreign powers and weather balloons or other airborne clutter explain most recent incidents of unidentified aerial phenomena — government-speak for U.F.O.s — as well as many episodes in past years.

The sightings have puzzled the Pentagon and intelligence agencies for years, fueling theories about visiting space aliens and spying by a hostile nation using advanced technology. But government officials say many of the incidents have far more ordinary explanations.

Intelligence agencies are set to deliver a classified document to Congress by Monday updating a report made public last year that said nearly all of the incidents remain unexplained. The original document looked at 144 incidents between 2004 and 2021 that were reported by U.S. government sources, mostly American military personnel.

This article is based on interviews with American officials familiar with the findings of the Pentagon and intelligence agencies’ examination of the incidents. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the classified work.

Some of the incidents have been formally attributed to Chinese surveillance — with relatively ordinary drone technology — and others are also thought to be connected to Beijing. China, which has stolen plans for advanced fighter planes, wants to learn more about how the United States trains its military pilots, according to American officials.

Much of the information about the unidentified phenomena remains classified. While Congress has been briefed on some of the conclusions about foreign surveillance, Pentagon officials have kept most of the work secret — in large measure because they do not want China or other countries to know that their efforts to spy on the American military were detected [...].

Pentagon analysts remain puzzled by some of the videos collected by the military. One where an object hovers over the water, jumps erratically, then peels away, is more difficult to explain, officials said. But analysts who have studied that video, as well as ones associated with eyewitness reports from aviators, are convinced it is not a piece of alien technology.

Nevertheless, efforts by the Pentagon or intelligence officials to stamp out theories about aliens have largely failed. The Pentagon has formed, and then reformed, groups inside the department to improve data collection around the incidents and provide better explanations [...].

There is a long history of the U.S. government using speculation over conspiracy theories to prevent secrets from becoming widely known. During the development of American spy planes like the U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird, the government allowed rumors about U.F.O. sightings to continue to help hide the development of those programs.

But intelligence officials concluded long ago that using conspiracy theories as cover for classified programs sows distrust in the American government and paranoia.
