Susan A. Manewich & Jefferey Jaxen on "Disclosure Gatekeepers"

From Susan A. Manewich and Jefferey Jaxen's 6-10-23 IET EVOLVE article entitled "What Are UFO Disclosure Gatekeepers Acclimating the Public To?"

The public received another drop of military intelligence agency-led 'disclosure’ this week. Vetting the story was, well, impossible. Why? Because it’s classified.

Unlike whistleblowers like Edward Snowden or Julian Assange, both revealing actual evidence, David Grusch’s ‘whistleblowing’ storytelling and ‘evidence’ are two different things altogether.

Grusch is alleging there is a secret UFO retrieval program [...].

Embedded within this current disclosure narrative are both subtle and not so subtle directives. First, if we don’t know what is ‘out there,’ the military, and by extension, the public must treat it as a threat. Second, the focus should be on the mechanistic and materialist aspects of this phenomena, nothing more because that’s what the military is looking at. How does it maneuver? What material are they made of? Can we back-engineer it?

Are forces at work crafting this narrowly defined disclosure narrative?

[Leslie] Keane said in an interview three days after the Grusch story was released, “It’s a matter of strategically bringing out aspects one step at a time and letting people acclimate to that.”

That sounds like gatekeeping of information.

Who’s making the decisions to strategically pick and choose what parts of this huge story the public gets to ‘acclimate to?’ And to what is the public acclimating?

Ted Kaczynski, Mind Control & AI

From Luke Barr and Meredith Deliso's 6-10-23 ABC NEWS report entitled "Unabomber Ted Kaczynski Dies by Possible Suicide in Prison":

Ted Kaczynski, the convicted terrorist known as the Unabomber, died by a possible suicide in his prison cell early Saturday, a source told ABC News. He was 81.

A source told ABC News the death is being investigated as a suicide but officially there is no cause of death yet.

Kaczynski was found unresponsive in his cell around 12:30 a.m. ET and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.Between 1978 and 1995, Kaczynski placed or mailed 16 bombs that killed three people and injured two dozen others, according to authorities [...].

In 1995, before he was identified as the Unabomber, he demanded newspapers publish a long manuscript he had written, saying the killings would continue otherwise. Both the New York Times and Washington Post published the 35,000-word manifesto later that year at the recommendation of the U.S. Attorney General and the director of the FBI.

From Bryan Pietsch's 6-11-23 WASHINGTON POST article entitled "Before He Was the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski Was a Mind-control Test Subject":

Ted Kaczynski, the anarchist and so-called Unabomber who died in a federal prison medical facility on Saturday, transformed from boy genius to terrorist, going from a star mathematics student to a feared assailant who targeted academics, scientists and industrialized society as a whole.

Kaczynski entered Harvard University as a 16-year-old on a scholarship, after skipping the sixth and 11th grades. It was there that he was subjected to an experiment run by Harvard psychologist Henry A. Murray that was backed by the Central Intelligence Agency. Though he graduated with a mathematics degree, later completing a doctorate in the field before becoming a professor, questions remain over whether — or to what extent — he was affected by the experiment, which reportedly involved mock interrogations in which participants’ beliefs were harshly disparaged.

Murray’s study was widely reported to be part of a CIA program code-named Project MK-Ultra, inspired by the use of mind-control techniques on U.S. prisoners of war in Korea by the Soviet Union, China and North Korea. The program sought to understand how to control subjects’ minds, sometimes using substances such as LSD, according to a document the CIA made publicly available in 2018. (There has not been evidence to suggest LSD or similar substances were used at Harvard on Kaczynski.)

“The project attempted to produce a perfect truth drug for use in interrogating suspected Soviet spies during the Cold War,” the document says. “And generally to explore any other possibilities of mind control.”

From Louis Anslow's 6-11-23 PESSIMISTS ARCHIVE blog post entitled "The Unabomber Was an AI Doomer (Obviously)":

[F]ew know Kaczynski specifically addressed the prospect of human level AI within [the] pages [of his manifesto] [...]. Near the end of his infamous screed - in a section titled ‘The Future’ - Kaczynski imagines a scenario where “industrial society does survive the next several decades” and asks “What kind of system will it be?” His answer? A techno-dystopia ruled by varying degrees of artificial intelligence....

The Las Vegas Incident

From David Charns' 6-7-23 8NewsNow article entitled "Las Vegas Family Claims to See Aliens After Several Report Something Falling from Sky":

A Las Vegas family claims something crashed in their backyard, prompting them to call 911 about “non-human” beings – the thing is, this time, several people saw it.

On April 30 around 11:50 p.m., a Las Vegas Metro police officer’s body camera video recorded as something streaked low across the sky. Several people across eastern California, Nevada and Utah reported seeing the flash, according to the American Meteor Society.

Sources tell the 8 News Now Investigators that it is likely something crashed into the yard, but exactly what remained unclear more than a month later. Drone video showed a circular imprint in the dirt.

About 40 minutes later, a man called 911, saying he and his family saw something fall from the sky and that there were two moving things in his northwest valley backyard.

THE DEBRIEF: "Intelligence Officials Say U.S. Has Retrieved Craft of Non-human Origin"

From Leslie Kean and Ralph Blumenthal's 6-5-23 THE DEBRIEF article entitled "Intelligence Officials Say U.S. Has Retrieved Craft of Non-human Origin":

A former intelligence official turned whistleblower has given Congress and the Intelligence Community Inspector General extensive classified information about deeply covert programs that he says possess retrieved intact and partially intact craft of non-human origin.

The information, he says, has been illegally withheld from Congress, and he filed a complaint alleging that he suffered illegal retaliation for his confidential disclosures, reported here for the first time.

Other intelligence officials, both active and retired, with knowledge of these programs through their work in various agencies, have independently provided similar, corroborating information, both on and off the record.

The whistleblower, David Charles Grusch, 36, a decorated former combat officer in Afghanistan, is a veteran of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). He served as the reconnaissance office’s representative to the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force from 2019-2021. From late 2021 to July 2022, he was the NGA’s co-lead for UAP analysis and its representative to the task force.

Andrew Feinberg on Mark Meadows

From Andrew Feinberg's 6-7-23 INDEPENDENT article entitled "Prosecutors Ready to Ask for Trump Indictment on Obstruction and Espionage Act Charges":

The Department of Justice is preparing to ask a Washington, DC grand jury to indict former president Donald Trump for violating the Espionage Act and for obstruction of justice as soon as Thursday, adding further weight to the legal baggage facing Mr Trump as he campaigns for his party’s nomination in next year’s presidential election.

The Independent has learned that prosecutors are ready to ask grand jurors to approve an indictment against Mr Trump for violating a portion of the US criminal code known as Section 793, which prohibits “gathering, transmitting or losing” any “information respecting the national defence”.

The use of Section 793, which does not make reference to classified information, is understood to be a strategic decision by prosecutors that has been made to short-circuit Mr Trump’s ability to claim that he used his authority as president to declassify documents he removed from the White House and kept at his Palm Beach, Florida property long after his term expired on 20 January 2021 [...].

A source who was briefed on the agreement claimed that the alleged agreement will involve the ex-chief of staff [Mark Meadows] entering pleas of guilty to unspecified federal crimes but an attorney for Mr Meadows, George Terwilliger, denied that to The Independent. Mr Terwilliger said that the idea that his client would enter any guilty pleas was “complete bulls***” but did not address the matter of immunity in a brief telephone conversation with this reporter.

It is not yet known whether the testimony or the charges in question relate to the documents probe, or a separate investigation into the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Both investigations are being overseen by a Department of Justice special prosecutor, Jack Smith. According to ABC News, Mr Meadows has given evidence in both the documents matter and the January 6 investigation.

Frank Zappa on Evangelicals

John Cale on Picasso

John Cale's "Pablo Picasso" from HELEN OF TROY (1975)

NEW YORK TIMES on Picasso & Gadsby

From Jason Farago's 6-1-23 NEW YORK TIMES article entitled "With Hannah Gadsby’s ‘It’s Pablo-matic,’ the Joke’s on the Brooklyn Museum":

Most bizarrely, [Hannah Gadsby's] routine rested on a condemnation of art as an elite swindle, and modernism got it particularly hard. “CUUU-bism,” went Gadsby’s mocking refrain, to reliable audience laughter. (As it is, Picasso’s own Cubist art appears at the Brooklyn Museum through a single 6-by-4.5-inch engraving.) The sarcasm, from a comedian with moderate art historical bona fides, had a purpose: It gave Gadsby’s audience permission to believe that avant-garde painting was actually a big scam. “They’re all cut from the same cloth,” Gadsby told the audience in “Nanette”: “Donald Trump, Pablo Picasso, Harvey Weinstein” — and the art you never liked in the first place could be dismissed as the flimflam of a cabal of evil men.

Not long ago, it would have been embarrassing for adults to admit that they found avant-garde painting too difficult and preferred the comforts of story time. What Gadsby did was give the audience permission — moral permission — to turn their backs on what challenged them, and to ennoble a preference for comfort and kitsch.

So who should be most brassed off by this show? Not Picasso, who gets out totally unharmed. But the women artists in the museum’s collection dragooned into this minor prank, and the generations of women and feminist art historians — Rosalind Krauss, Anne Wagner, Mary Ann Caws, hundreds more — who have devoted their careers to thinking seriously about modern art and gender. Especially at the Brooklyn Museum, whose engagement with feminist art is unique in New York, I left sad and embarrassed that this show doesn’t even try to do what it promises: put women artists on equal footing with the big guy.

“My story has value,” Gadsby said in “Nanette”; and then, “I will not allow my story to be destroyed”; and then, “Stories hold our cure.” But Howardena Pindell, on view here, is much more than a storyteller; Cindy Sherman, on view here, is much more than a storyteller. They are artists who, like Picasso before them, put ideas and images into productive tension, with no reassurance of closure or comfort. The function of a public museum (or at least it should be) is to present to all of us these women’s full aesthetic achievements; there is also room for story hour, in the children’s wing.

Censorship Corner: THE FRENCH CONNECTION

From Douglas Helm's 6-6-23 GIANT FREAKIN ROBOT article entitled "Gene Hackman’s Classic Crime Movie Gets Censored By Criterion":

A censored version of Gene Hackman’s classic 1971 The French Connection is currently in the Criterion Collection, as reported by Word of Reel. The censored scene in question, which doesn’t appear in the version whatsoever, contains two ethnic slurs in dialogue spoken by Hackman’s Popeye Doyle character. In the scene, Doyle says “You dumb guinea,” and “Never trust a [slur].”

Although the cut scene is minor, it is an interesting choice to censor it considering the context it gives Gene Hackman‘s character. Hackman plays an NYPD detective in The French Connection, and Doyle is frankly an unsavory person, so it’s not surprising that a cop from the 1970s would be racist. Taking the scene out probably makes Doyle seem like more of a good guy than he actually is.

From Jordon Ruimy's 6-6-23 WORLD OF REEL article entitled "Disney Might Be To Blame for ‘The French Connection’ Censorship":

Three days ago, the censoring of a six-second sequence in William Freidkin’s “The French Connection” was reported by Hollywood Elsewhere.

The gist of this nixing had to do with Gene Hackman’s gritty cop character, Popeye Doyle, uttering the N-word. This was spotted on the Criterion Channel stream of Friedkin’s 1971 classic.

Well, apparently, the rights holders to the film are none other than Disney. Criterion had nothing to do with the censorship. It is presumed that the sequence was removed by Disney, which bought the film’s original owner, 20th Century Fox in March of 2019.

So the theory now is that Disney probably went in and censored it, but, you know, for your own good....

Books Unbanned!

Heads up! In April of 2022, the Brooklyn Public Library initiated a program called Books Unbanned:

"Brooklyn Public Library joins those fighting for the rights of teens nationwide to read what they like, discover themselves, and form their own opinions. Inspired by the American Library Association's Freedom to Read Statement, BPL's Books Unbanned initiative is a response to an increasingly coordinated and effective effort to remove books tackling a wide range of topics from library shelves.

"The American Library Association documented 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022, the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago. The tally is nearly double that of the 729 book challenges reported in 2021. Most targeted books were for a teen audience and were by or about Black or LGBTQIA+ persons.

"Across the country, teens continue to face rising attempts at book bans, censorship, and political challenges in their local school and public libraries. Here are just some of the ways young adults can get support from BPL...."

In April of 2023, the Seattle Public Library also began participating in the Books Unbanned initiative.
