LOS ANGELES TIMES: Harry Litman on the Possible Future of Donald Trump

From Harry Litman's 8-28-23 LOS ANGELES TIMES Op-Ed piece entitled “Donald Trump Just Saw the Inside of a Jailhouse — and Possibly His Own Miserable Future”:

Trump did receive some special treatment that distinguished him — for the worse — even from some of his 18 co-defendants in the sprawling racketeering case. He is now subject to a detailed set of conditions in return for the continued privilege of staying out of the county’s notoriously decrepit jail.

In addition to posting $200,000 bail, he must not intimidate any co-defendant or witness in the case “or otherwise obstruct the administration of justice.” And the court included another condition tailored to Trump by specifying that the communication restrictions apply to social media posts and reposts.

Trump’s agreement to these conditions — and Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee’s duty to protect court personnel and witnesses from intimidation and the jury from bias — provide ample authority to muzzle and punish Trump should he continue engaging in incendiary rhetoric about the case. But Trump’s track record provides every reason for concern that he will ignore his obligations and essentially dare the court to impose a gag order, hold him in contempt and put him in jail.

No one in the system wants that. Like U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is overseeing the federal election interference case, McAfee is certainly aware of the ferocious blowback that would result from even briefly locking up the leading candidate for the Republican nomination for president.

The question, however, is whether Trump will leave the judge any choice. He may be determined to flout the order, concluding that he will be celebrated as a rebel for defying the authorities and a martyr if they bring him to heel. The showdown will only reinforce his claims that the Deep State is coming for him and by extension his supporters [...].

Trump might nevertheless be able to forestall justice for himself, if not prevent it altogether, if he becomes president again. It’s my view that the Supreme Court could find that the Fulton County proceedings would have to be held in abeyance until the end of his term. And who knows what damage to the rule of law Trump may have wrought by then?

THE WASHINGTON POST on the Smithsonian's "Racial Brain Collection"

From Nicole Dungca and Claire Healy's 8-14-23 WASHINGTON POST article entitled "Revealing the Smithsonian's 'Racial Brain Collection'":

Most of the brains were removed upon death from Black and Indigenous people and other people of color. They are part of a collection of at least 30,700 human bones and other body parts still held by the Natural History Museum, the most-visited museum within the Smithsonian. The collection, one of the largest in the world, includes mummies, skulls, teeth and other body parts, representing an unknown number of people.

The remains are the unreconciled legacy of a grisly practice in which bodies and organs were taken from graveyards, battlefields, morgues and hospitals in more than 80 countries. The decades-long effort was financed and encouraged by the taxpayer-subsidized institution. The collection, which was mostly amassed by the early 1940s, has long been hidden from view. The Washington Post has assembled the most extensive analysis and accounting of the holdings to date.

The vast majority of the remains appear to have been gathered without consent from the individuals or their families, by researchers preying on people who were hospitalized, poor, or lacked immediate relatives to identify or bury them. In other cases, collectors, anthropologists and scientists dug up burial grounds and looted graves.

The Natural History Museum has lagged in its efforts to return the vast majority of the remains in its possession to descendants or cultural heirs, The Post’s investigation found. Of at least 268 brains collected by the museum, officials have repatriated only four.

The Smithsonian requires people with a personal interest or legal right to the remains to issue a formal request, a virtual impossibility for many would-be claimants, since they are unaware of the collection’s existence. A federal law mandates that the Smithsonian only inform Native American, Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian communities about any remains, leaving an estimated 15,000 body parts in limbo.

Devin Stone on the Georgia Indictment

It's RICO in Georgia

THE BULWARK on the Georgia Indictment

From Will Saletan's 8-16-23 THE BULWARK article entitled "What’s Actually New in the Georgia Indictment?":

THIS WEEK’S INDICTMENT OF DONALD TRUMP and 18 alleged co-conspirators, handed down by a grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia, asserts that “Trump and the other Defendants . . . knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome” of the 2020 election. But many of the acts detailed in the indictment, such as tweets and testimony at hearings, were out in the open. Trump and his collaborators will say—in fact, they’re already saying—that they genuinely believed the election had been stolen, and they were just trying to correct that injustice.

What’s the evidence that these people knowingly and willfully participated in a conspiracy, as opposed to a legitimate effort to contest the election results?

The Georgia indictment enumerates many acts that demonstrate the defendants’ deceit or awareness of illegality. Some of these acts were mentioned in the federal indictment of Trump released on Aug. 1. But others are new. Here’s a guide to some of these key allegations in the Fulton County indictment [...].

The indictment also describes many other acts as part of the alleged conspiracy. But these are the most difficult ones to explain. Honest people don’t rehearse claims of fraud before it happens. They don’t file allegations they know are false. They don’t misrepresent statements they directly witnessed. They don’t scheme to bypass courts and legislative hearings to seize power. They don’t try to hide what they’re doing, and they don’t lie about it afterward.

Trump and his accomplices did all these things. Their campaign to overturn the election wasn’t just deluded. It was corrupt.

The Attack of the Peruvian Face Peelers

From Sam Allcock's 8-7-23 MSN.com report entitled "Peruvian Villagers Report Attacks by 7ft Armoured Aliens Resembling Green Goblin from Spider-Man":

Terrified villagers in a rural district of Alto Nanay, north-east of Lima, Peru, claim they are under attack by 7ft tall armoured aliens that bear a striking resemblance to the Green Goblin from Spider-Man. According to the locals, these extraterrestrial beings have large heads and yellowish eyes, and they have been launching nightly attacks on the community since 11 July.

One alarming incident involved a 15-year-old girl who was reportedly grabbed from behind and had her neck cut when she resisted. The community members are living in fear, unable to sleep peacefully due to the constant threat.

From Matthew Phelan's 8-12-23 DAILY MAIL article entitled "Flying 7ft-tall 'Alien' Attackers in Peru Were Actually Illegal Gold Mining Gang on Jetpacks":

Reports of 'seven-foot-tall aliens' terrorizing villagers in Peru stunned the world this week, with local leaders describing the 'armored' and 'floating' menaces as impervious to bullets.

The locals also compared their attackers to 'green goblins' and local Peruvian superstitions about 'los Pelacaras,' ('the Face Peelers') ― but now Peruvian law enforcement has offered a new suspect.

Illegal gold-mining crime syndicates, they said, are to blame: branches of the storied drug cartels like Brazil's 'O Primeiro Comando da Capital,' Colombia's 'Clan del Golfo,' FARC, and others who have ravaged Latin America for decades.

Peru's National Prosecutor's Office, which is now investigating the 'alien attacks,' has pointed the finger at these gold 'mafias,' who have been partially ejected from Brazil and Colombia by their militaries.

Now in Peru, these jetpack-flying gold cartels hope to inspire fear with their bizarre campaign of 'alien' terror, according to prosecutors, keeping the locals in their homes and away from the cartels' illegal gold pits [...].

According to a 2022 USAID report, the Madre de Dios area alone had roughly 6,000 gold miners working with formal permission from the Peruvian government.

But nearly six-times more, about 40,000 illegal gold miners, were also operating in Madre de Dios by USAID's estimates.

So far in 2023, Quintanilla and his Environmental Prosecutor's Office in Loreto report that they have managed to destroy 110 illegal gold dredges and 10 mining camps.

This past weekend, Peruvian Navy fighters faced fire with illegal miners near the Pucaurco and Alvarenga communities, RPP reports, where they succeeded in destroying oil drums, a gold-pit water suction system, and other equipment used by the criminal gold miners.

But no jetpacks were reported as recovered from those weekend raids.

Utah Man

From Andrew Blankstein, Tom Winter, Phil McCausland, and Antonio Planas' 8-9-23 NBC News report entitled "FBI Fatally Shoots Man in Utah Who Allegedly Threatened Biden, Alvin Bragg and Others":

The FBI on Wednesday shot and killed a Utah man who allegedly made online threats to kill President Joe Biden and New York prosecutor Alvin Bragg while serving a warrant at his Provo home, officials said.

The suspect was identified in charging documents obtained by NBC News as Craig Deleeuw Robertson.

Robertson allegedly made a threat Monday that referenced the president's trip to Utah this week, saying he needed to prepare his camouflage and sniper rifle.

In an alleged threat to Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney whose office is prosecuting former President Donald Trump, Robertson called him a political hack and plotted to assassinate him in a parking garage, the charging documents said [...].

The FBI National Threat Operations Center received a tip in March from a social media company pertaining to a user called @winston4eagles, which allegedly showed the user posting about killing Bragg.

The FBI’s operation center believed the person with that user name to be Robertson, according to the charging documents. On March 19, the charging documents said, two special agents with the FBI conducted surveillance at Robertson’s address in Provo. He was seen “wearing a dark suit (later observed as having an AR-15 style rifle lapel pin attached), a white shirt, a red tie, and a multi-colored (possibly camouflage) hat bearing the word 'TRUMP' on the front," the charging documents said.

After attending church, the special agents confronted Robertson about the comment he allegedly made on social media, the documents said. Robertson confirmed to the agents he was winston4eagles and responded that the comment "was a dream."

UFOs & the Vatican

From Grace Eliza Goodwin's 7-27-23 BUSINESS INSIDER article entitled "The Ex-intel Officer Who Testified the US Has Proof of Aliens Previously Made the Wild Claim that the Vatican Was Part of a UFO Cover-up":

In an interview with NewsNation in June, [David] Grusch expanded on his belief that there's a massive international cover-up of alien life that's been going on for 90 years.

He told NewsNation that in 1933 the Italian government under Benito Mussolini recovered a UAP, which it then "moved to a secure airbase in Italy for the rest of the fascist regime until 1944-1945."

Then, shockingly, Grusch said Pope Pius XII "backchanneled that" and the Vatican "told the Americans what the Italians had and we ended up scooping it."

The interviewer, Ross Coulthart, then asked, "You're saying that the Catholic Church — the Vatican — they know about the existence of non-human intelligence on this Earth?"

Grusch responded, "Certainly."

AGENDA 47

In Chauncey DeVega's 7-14-23 SALON article entitled "Be Very Afraid: Trump's 'Agenda 47' Is No Joke," journalist Paul Mason (author of HOW TO STOP FASCISM) comments on Trump's AGENDA 47:

"The key difference between Agenda 47 and the original Trump pitch in 2016 is its total lack of focus on corporate, capitalist goals, and its total focus on fulfilling right-wing populist fantasies. Dud city building projects in the desert, the expulsion of homeless people to tent cities, the pardon of fascist insurrectionaries and a year-long funfair… it's like a politics designed around video-game fantasies. The good news is, it's a signal of how detached Trump is even from the libertarian-turned-fascist wing of the American tech elite. It lacks any sense of realism even about the agenda they want - massive deregulation and the marketisation of public services.

"The bad news is that it could work. Like QAnon, this collection of fantasies will take on a life of its own and is intended to: you can design your own state fair, state by state, with the Gadsden flags and AR-15 firing ranges. You can fantasize about which particular homeless street you would hose down first, the day after the inauguration. What matters is that serious GOP politicians push back and explain gently to the American people that this is baby talk, and that what stands behind it - should Trump succeed - is the intended collapse of American power and status in the world.

"The imaginary cities are about more than just Jetson fantasies - they will be read, quite openly, as white only; and on Federal land they will be designed to abrogate the rights of homeless people - they're a sop to the fantasies of the seasteaders and the preppers. Like all fascist myths they are designed to animate action in the present rather than actually to get built - just like Hitler's never built Germania model: it was something to clear slums for and remove populations long before they ever actually planned to build it."
